A quick round-up of the season’s calves.
Shadybrook Powerplay 802U is now a grandsire: his daughter D. Lancaster 268 calved a bull calf by D. Uncle Ted 210 in February. We only used a limited amount of Powerplay semen, so she is our one breeding-age daughter of his, and it is good to see her doing her job.
We have a fair number of autumn calves on the ground by Saskvalley Yesterday 116Y, our heifer bull, after bringing in a second tranche of his semen in 2016. We have been very unlucky with his earlier progeny, losing a number to tick-borne diseases, which is one of the realities of farming close to the coast.
We are also waiting on the first calf from a D. Tarantino 159 daughter, expected in August.
