Mike Burgess from Farmer’s Weekly came out to Forest Glade to talk Shorthorns, and his article, “Reviving the South African Beef Shorthorn”, is out now.

It covers why we chose the breed in 2003 (it had fallen out of favour in South Africa despite everything it has to offer), the move in 2009 to Forest Glade, a 236 ha former dairy farm near Alexandria, and buying the Primeston stud when it came onto the market in 2013. It also mentions that we bred the 2018 ARC National Special Performance Beef Shorthorn bull.

We now run about 120 registered females and sell between three and six bulls a year, mostly to commercial farmers for crossbreeding, and our top bull price so far is R44 000.

Thank you to Mike and Farmer’s Weekly for the visit.
