Duncraggan Auld Reekie 496

Taking a look at his pedigree and performance records below, we would like to point out the strength of the dam lines in his pedigree. Dams and grand dams all have ICPs under 373 days, with his maternal grand dam being our first Elite Platinum cow in our herd with an ICP of 367 days over 10 calves.

He came out the cows mid-July, and has been on forage and lick since the beginning of August, in preparation for the sale.

Our other two bulls on offer are two-and-a-half years old now. They are D.Bradman 540, a Sprys All Gold D052 son, and D. Bendigo 541, who has All Gold going back on both his dam’s and sire’s side. These bulls are conditioning in Cathcart, and we will have pictures to share before the sale takes place.

As usual, we will have the bulls in an optimum condition without being over-conditioned and we believe that the bulls, as in the past, will not fall apart once they reach your property and are put to work.

The bulls will have been tested for fertility, and CA and TB tested, and D. Auld Reekie 496 will have been sheath-washed as well. They have been inoculated with Supavax and Covexin-10. All the bulls also have DNA parentage verification – you get in the flesh what you see on paper.

Due to the treacherous drought we have endured over the last few years, with seven consecutive years of sub-normal rainfall which has ranged from 45% to 80% of the expected annual average, we couldn’t get the 2020 born bulls to minimum wean weights for Phase C testing.

At weaning time we generally select our bull calves according to what traits we are trying to enhance in our own herds. We have been pursuing moderate frame and doability for a number of years now. This, in combination with selection for higher IMF and more Fats, is definitely improving the conception rates as well as decreasing the maintenance feeding required in the herds, even with the perpetual dry we seem to be enduring.

We have always tried to keep one more bull than we have sold at the specific year’s bull sale and this has resulted in our slow reduction to a rather low number of sale bulls. From 2023 we have decided, a decision made two years ago, to increase numbers to 4-6 bulls per year. This is in consultation with Sheard Auctioneers who have told us that you can’t attract buyers with too few bulls. I hope this strategy works, it will certainly be to the advantage of our regular buyers who have picked up outstanding bulls in the past.

We think that with the figures available at your disposal that you should be able to make an informed decision as to which bull would best suite your operation. We have a growth orientated bull, a frame size moderator with calving ease, and an all-rounder. We’ll see you at the sale where you can choose the right bull for your herd.
